This is where it all started.
This Banyan tree (Ficus benghalensis) is D Ravindran’s very first Bonsai tree. This was collected from a hill near Nagercoil in1970. Estimated age at time of collection is 20 years. Since then Ravindran has been training this into a Bonsai.
With the bonsais finding a permanent home in Nikki Bonsai Garden, Padmanabhapuram, this venerable old tree with more than four decades behind it has come to find a new home.
It has been taken out of the confines of its pot and today occupies a prime position of pride in the center of Nikki Bonsai Garden on a horizontal slab of rock, in a thoroughly natural setting. The Banyan is considered a sacred tree in Indian culture and it is associated with Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles in the HIndu pantheon. So at Nikki Bonsai, you would find an idol of the benevolent deity under this majestic banyan, gracing the garden.
Naturally, this is one of the prime attractions of the garden and a favorite spot for photo shoots.
