The Classification of Bonsai trees at Nikki Bonsai

Ficus jacguinifolia Bonsai at Nikki Bonsai

Many a times have I been queried on the best way in classification of Bonsai, whether to start on the broader categories of Bonsai, maybe taking into account the different sizes of Bonsai and so on. At Nikki Bonsai, what I have faithfully followed is to have them categorized according to their sizes, both in my nursery and here, in its online representation.

As far as tropical Bonsai is concerned, the categorization  is decided by the species, its growing nature, and care during summer, winter and dry weather. Another deciding factor for size classification of Bonsai is according to the size of the leaves.

Based on all the above facts tropical Bonsai can be broadly classified into  six categories :

  1. Miniature bonsai (  Mame bonsai ) ..Below 5 inches.
  2. Small Bonsai ……………………………..5 to 10 inches.
  3. Medium Bonsai ………………………….10 to 24  inches.
  4. Big Bonsai  ………………………………… 24 to 36 inches.
  5. Large Bonsai……………………………… 36 to 48 inches
  6. Extra large ………………………………… above 48 inches.

A note on Miniature Bonsai  or Mame Bonsai ( pronounced “Ma-May” )
It is very difficult to create a Bonsai with all its features in this size. Maintenance is also very difficult especially during summer and winter, and even more difficult under Indian conditions. Very few plant species are suitable for this is.  Ficus nerifolia, Carmono microphylla, Wrightia relegiosa ( mini ), Portulacaria afra ( varigata ), etc. For the beginners in Bonsai culture developing a mini Bonsai is not advisable. Only an experienced Bonsai artists can create a mini Bonsai and small Bonsai successfully .
