Besides being a Bonsai developer, D Ravindran of Nikki Bonsai is also an enthusiastic environmentalist and votary for reforestation. In 1999 he joined the Nagercoil Chapter of OISCA International, headquartered in Tokyo, as secretary and since then has been actively involved in reforestation projects and its Green Initiatives.

Ravindran currently serves as the Secretary (Tamil Nadu) of OISCA’s South India Chapter. He is dynamically occupied in environmental issues and has done monumental work in converting and developing a barren hill in Chunkankadai, on the outskirts of Nagercoil, into a lush green man made forest by planting and maintaining more than 40,000 native trees. This massive endeavour has been accomplished with the help of school children, NCC cadets, NSS volunteers and the members of OISCA – Nagercoil.

This is one amongst the many green initiatives being supported by OISCA South India,  OISCA International Headquarters and Green Fund, Japan. It is an ongoing project and every year the area is extended by planting more trees. This project, called the Children’s Forest Programme (CFP) of OISCA International has been recognized as one of its best afforestation projects.

The greatest achievement of this project is that it has immensely helped in creating awareness among children about the need for preserving the environment. Several office bearers and members of OISCA, and government officials from around the globe, have visited the project area.

Mr. Peter Chan was also one of the visitors and he planted a Baobab tree (Adonsonia digitata) on this hill to commemorate his visit.

  1. I have seen this Hill during 1950 ies when it was a barren hill with only one tree—a Banyan or Peepal, Ihave forgotten— Now also ihave seen its transformation into a great forest–doesn’t look like a man made .This is the result of Mr. Ravindran’s abundant love for plants and nature .This is a permanant testimony fo his hard work. All Nature Lovers must thank him and follow him by planting atleast one tree.!!
