Casuarina equisetifolia is regarded as a tropical pine and in the field of tropical bonsai, it has come to be an excellent substitute for Japanese pine. It is a perfect tree for Bonsai since it lends itself to be trained into all traditional styles with ease and makes for beautiful Bonsai specimens.
Sometime during his bonsai journey, D Ravindran developed a great fascination for this tree and he has been doing considerable work on it. He finds them a delight to work on and has been researching about how well they can be trained into the various styles of bonsai. This tree with a vigorous growth rate requires intense pruning and wiring to refine into the desired styles. He hopes to gradually have specimens in each style. As a result, Nikki Bonsai Garden has a whole area dedicated to these evergreens with their slender foliage. Nikki Bonsai Garden’s Casuarina Corner features a considerable number of them and you can see all major styles of bonsai exhibited here.
The exclusive grove for Casuarina is arranged in the style of a Japanese garden with gravel and stone features and has displays in both formal and informal group planting. The informal style was arranged barely a year back. It is also one of the chief attractions of the Garden.
